How to Imprint A Feeling

We all have  feelings. The continuum is vast. We often feel sorrow long after a tragedy. We often feel joy long after a celebration. Why is this? It’s because we have subconsciously imprinted our feelings based on our past experiences of that feeling. So, if we do this on a subconscious level, can we not Imprint a Feeling on a conscious level? Of course, you can.

Why Imprint a Feeling? It’s important to know that we can consciously accept our emotions and change them as need be. To change them, we need to go within to find a new meaning and feeling for that emotion of the moment. If we have not taken the time to imprint an emotion, then we can not access it. If we have taken the time, then we can access that imprinted feeling when we are experiencing that emotion again and shift it to the positive feeling you have created around it. 

101_0745.1To Imprint a Feeling, you simply SIT with the EMOTION and create a meaning around it. Take some time and think about all the emotions you have experienced. One by one sit with that emotion, what it means and how it feels. If it feels yicky, then shift it into a softer feeling. (For example, You lost a loved one and have felt deep sorrow. Go within, feel that emotion, and shift into gratitude for having them in your life and the joy that they brought to you at that time. Sit with the New Feeling and imprint the feeling into yourself.) Do this ~ over time ~ with as many emotions as you can think of. The spectrum goes from love and joy to pain and sorrow and everything in between.

How do you access a Feeling that you have Imprinted? You do it by sitting still and going within to find the imprinted feeling. when you do that the experiential feeling is shifted to your imprinted feeling. The more you practice this, the more you can easily and sometimes effortlessly change your emotions.


I’ll give you two examples:

1) You are at a wedding where you have encountered true bliss. That night you take time to imprint this feeling of utter joy and love into your being. Then, when you want to experience it again, you can switch a joyless experience into joyful by accessing that imprinted feeling.

2) The weather is drizzly and dreary and you feel lonely and sad. You take a moment and go within and accept this feeling and shift it into a time of connecting with self and shift the lonely feeling to one of knowing that you always have your best friend (you) by your side. Then, when lonely and sad affect you again, you can go within and connect with self and support by your side.

I don’t know about you but I surely love taking that lonely and sad feeling and making it ‘softer’ at any given time. I also like taking that Joyful time and taking it to a higher level. You can do this by simply Imprinting a Positive Feeling around all the experiences you have.

  3. Really good explanation of imprinting feelings. On a recent vacation, my husband was taking photos of Everything. I tried to explain that he could just remember how he felt when standing inside the huge cathedral in Seville, instead of taking a photo to remember it…but my explanation was horrible! I will use yours next time.

  17. Hmmm. I don’t know. If we imprint a feeling over another, such as imprinting gratitude over sorrow, there is the energy of pushing away or judging the sorrow, as if it were inappropriate in some way. Why imprint a new feeling when any feeling is simply an energy moving through?

    For me, when I’ve tried to change my emotions, it always results in a war and creates more resistance. Inherent in trying to change them is a judgement, almost a violence against that emotion. “you! bad! shoo!” But if we meet whatever we are feeling or experiencing with love, tenderness and acceptance, we allow that feeling to express and move on.

  18. I’m not saying to ‘not experience’ feelings. We need to do that. But if we can as you say experience it with acceptance and tenderness ~ as you say ~ by having a new understanding about it We can express it with compassion and move on. One example. My grandmother passed…she was my world, my light and my biggest advocate and I mourned and ended up falling into a deep depression. I then learned this technique and imprinted mourning of sorrow but also of embracing the essence of someone ~ their heart, their soul. Then, when my mom passed, It was a softer mourning for me. Now, after 8 years, I still think about calling her and laugh and cry that she’s gone but I value the essence of her and glad her wings have soared. Does this make sense?

  21. Laura, I think of it as techniques for not feeling overwhelmed by feelings. It isn’t that one can control whether or not they feel something, but sitting with the feeling/emotion and understanding what it is and where it is within you can give you some perspective on what it is and where it comes from. I have found that people often will imprint feelings onto objects and when they touch the object it takes them back to that emotion/feeling in a nano-second. If they are prone to this, I don’t let my clients touch stuff so that they can view it more objectively. Maybe that is what you are asking us to do with this exercise.

  22. Janine ~ interesting point about objects ~ they do take on meanings and then it’s challenging to let them go because of the attachment and, yes, that’s what this exercise does too. It’s not about NOT feeling but more about why we have the feelings we do. Seeing an object, smelling a smell, hearing a voice can all trigger memories and memories hold emotions. If we have not become objective about the emotion ~ especially negative one’s and imprinted upon it something on it of value, then it can consume you again.We often forget that people are made of their thoughts, their emotions, their soul and the physical body that holds all of these. Each of these has value and needs to be balanced for our spirit to be able to soar!

  23. Hey Laura, great post, I’ve been doing a gratitude experiment in which was quite successful at before. It’s funny when the focus is in thankfulness for instance you don’t focus on anything else. I believe that you choose to have a feeling to. I like the idea of imprinting it.
    It’s funny I’ve been sick all week and the sun came out so I made sure I made my place to hang near the window that gives off the most sun. It was great. Then the sun went down. And I felt sad. Any way just saying. Have a great weekend! Blessings!

  24. Lorraine! thanks for your thoughts….i believe that feelings come upon us ~ we may not choose them BUT we can certainly tweak our belief about them. See you can be said that the sun went down but when you remember what it DID give you ~ it’s just less sad and then you can embrace it more when it comes your way again! Hope you are feeling better!

  25. I’m going to try this in regard to the weather. The grey skies of NYC in winter make me feel depressed, but the dread of them approaching is almost worse. I need to change the resonance so I can appreciate winter for what it is and not infuse it with more negativity.

  26. I hear you Danielle! I use to suffer from SADS badly ~ i use a bluelight now and the time to go inward and reflect. Today, it’s blustery-gusty here and I’m using the element of air and it’s energetic connection on thoughts to clear my mind!!!! Let me know how this works for you!

Laura, love the post concept and the conversation going on here about imprinting feelings, versus having them (i.e. letting them “be.”) For me, your example of shifting feelings about the weather is valuable. I am simply more optimistic and productive on sunny days than cloudy and it doesn’t make sense to forgo productivity when I can shift my outlook through conscious effort. Merci!

We are all human and sometimes we just have ‘those days’ or times when we are not in a place/time that supports that for us so, yes, shifting our outlooks can raise our vibrations into more obtimsm and productivity!!!!
