Don’t Start Your Day with a Broken Promise

I broke a promise to myself today. I did. And, it is setting a bad tone for the rest of the day. I’ve done this often in my life. But, until this morning, I did not understand what ramifications it REALLY had for me. Do you break promises to yourself?

I’m at a conference. Before going to bed, I set my alarm for ~~~ early ~~~ so that I could get up and go exercise and be ready for a full day. The snooze alarm went off. And, I hit it. I turned over and got comfy under the wonderful blanket ~ it was a comfortable hotel bed. I fell back to sleep. The snooze alarm went off. An, I hit it. I turned over and got comfy under the wonderful blanket ~ I was so COMFORTABLE. Just ONE more cycle. Just one more cycle.

An hour later, I got up. I missed the opportunity to  go exercise. I had to get ready for the conference now.

Sure. I can say I was tired.

Sure, I can say the extra sleep did me wonders. But, really, did it? How much sleep do you really get when the snooze button goes off every 10 minutes??? Really???

Can you imagine if I had told someone I would meet them to go for a morning walk? I would have, right? You would have. I would not just have blown it off.

Can you imagine if you told a client this? “I’ll be there in 10 minutes. I’ll be right there. No really, just 10 more minutes and “ll be right there.” You wouldn’t do it.

Making appointments with yourself is just as important ~ if not more than making appointments with others. Keeping them is vital to setting the right path and purpose for yourself. I always have my Grandmother’s voice whispering in my ear “Laura your word is sacred. Keep it always.” She did NOT tell me that that also meant keeping your word to yourself. But, be honest, how many times do we tell ourselves that we are going to do something (get up at 5:30) and then don’t (hit the snooze alarm)? How often do you break promises to yourself?

How would your best friend feel if you constantly were saying you were going to do something with her, for her, and then didn’t? I doubt she’d be your best friend for long. And the first step of my R.E.A.P.™ Clarity And Success System is identifying who your best friend is (hint: it’s YOU) and what you tell her (yourself) all the time.

So, today, I will not allow myself to begin the day again with the broken promise of the snooze button. I will let the alarm go off….stretch and yawn through the FIRST SNOOZE Cycle and then get up. I guess I’ll be setting the alarm for 10 minutes earlier than I want to get out of bed! I will not allow the allure of an ill-thinking friend (the snooze button) to break a promise to myself.

Affirmation: “I keep promises I make to myself, just as if they were promises I make to others.”

Do you allow the snooze alarm to take place over promises you make to yourself?

  1. I needed this today! So many broken promises to myself. I’m going to write a blog post, going to write up an agreement, going to do this, do that…
I’ve signed up to your emails so I get more like this.
    Thanks heaps!

  2. Phillipa~ isn’t it so true that we have to FOCUS on our own promises but when we make a promise to someone else it just happens?! I think an agreement with yourself is a wonderful thing!!! So glad you found it helpful. KEEP SMILING 🙂

  3. Wonderful! Thanks for a little look inside ourselves. You are so right in your framing of it. -Steve/wiz.

  4. So glad you enjoyed it…’s something we all know ~ the need to keep promises to ourselves ~ I think everyone has allowed the snooze button to break promises to themselves at some point in time! KEEP SMILING 🙂
