Desire. Decide. Declare. Do.

That’s The formula. Simple, really. When you are thinking about doing something ~ anything at all ~ simple or BIG. It’s all about simply this: Desire. Decide. Declare. Do. Well, there’s a lot more to it. I Ran to Home Base this year.

The Run-Walk to Home base is co-sponsored by the Red Sox Foundation & Mass. General Hospital to raise awareness for the invisible wounds of war. One in Three veteran’s suffer from this!  This 9k run raises funds for it and goes through the city of Boston and ends at Home Plate Fenway park! My desire runs deep.

You see I had wanted to do since it began ~ 4 years ago. 4 years ago, I learned about it a week after it was held. 3 years ago, I had ankle problems. 2 years ago, I was having bilateral ankle surgery. And, last year, I was still rehabbing from those surgeries. This year, I needed something that would spearhead me forward into taking better care of myself.

I LOVE the Redsox. And, the idea of stepping across home plate inspired me further.

But, the desire really goes deeper. Once upon a time, I had worked at the RI Veteran’s home and knew first hand of the invisible wounds of war. Today, I work with veteran’s at the Navy Station in Newport, RI and I know too well the challenges veteran’s face coming home from war. My purpose is to help people discover how to live In-Joy and I can find no group that deserves this more than Veteran’s who come home from war after serving their country.

Yes! It was hard doing what I did for me BUT my Desire outweighed that and I followed the formula:

Step #1 Desire.

It has to be a burning deep desire. To find your’s you need to sit still and create space for it to come up from your Soul! You have to have a deep desire to really accomplish a goal.

That’s what I did when I had a burning desire to Run to Home Base this year. I really wanted to get back into shape and I needed something BIG that I could sink my teeth into. Something that would stoke me. The Run to Home Base did just that. It stretched my abilities. It was running to Home Base in FENWAY PARK!!!! AND, it was to raise awareness for the invisible wounds of war. Something near and dear to me.

Step #2 Decide.

Make the decision. Don’t hem & haw over it. Just say Yes and move forward or say No and move forward. Either way, the hemming and hawing takes energy that can be better used elsewhere in your life!

I made the decision. Yes, I spent sometime over whether I could  do it. I spent sometime over whether I wanted  to do it.

But, when I sat listening to my own inner wisdom ~ the decision was already made.

Step #3 Declare.

Shout it from the mountain tops. But, here’s the key. You have to tell people you respect and who you value and who you do not want to think of you differently than a person who does what you say you are going to do. Period. And, let people know who will do two things ~ support you AND hold you accountable.

This is the piece  I’ve missed at so many points in my life. Accountability by people you love and trust and who will gently (and sometimes with a little prodding) support you. I announced it to two different tribes and they did just that. Whenever I felt I needed support, I simply remembered the expression of one of them when I declared it, and there was no way I could not do it. I would call someone or remember the donations that came in supporting ME in doing THIS. How could I not be inspired and do it?

Step #4 Do.

Then, you just Do. Create or find a step x step system you can follow Use professionals if you can! It’s so much easier. Use one’s who have been there, done that. There support will be invaluable. Follow it and Do.

I followed a Couch to 10K training module. I wish I had followed it more closely really. But, it was there because I knew it worked and had I followed the regimen with greater accuracy, I’d have done ‘better’. See below what ‘better’ really is.

Desire. Decide. Declare. Do. Easy? Well, there may be bumps in the road BUT if you get a burning desire, Decide you WILL do it, Declare it to people you respect and can count on for support and accountability, and follow a plan. Success will be your’s.

Did I EXCEL at accomplishing my Run to Home Base? No. By most people’s standards, probably not, I was really slow. But, I had three goals. Could I have done better in accordance with my own personal goals? Nope because they were: To cross the finish line (Home Plate Fenway Park), to get into shape, and to raise awareness for the invisible wounds of war. Did I accomplish this? Oh Yeah Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While there were many MANY MANY hero’s in the ball park that day, here I am with my #1 Hero!

I’ll be writing and talking more about this as I know how difficult it can be for my clients to step forward fearlessly. But, I’m here to tell you that you can!

What do you really desire to do? Achieve a milestone at work? Create more Success in your business? Get into better shape? Have more Joy in your life? Whatever it is ~ create that burning desire in you and you can achieve it with this recipe: Desire. Decide. Declare. Do.  What burning desire do you have? I want to know and support it!

  3. Nice job, Laura! WOOOHOOOOO! 9k isn’t a minor accomplishment! I love the cause, too – we need a lot more support for our veterans.

And I love your 4 D’s, too. I’ve had resistance to some of those steps in the past and I know it has really held me back. Now I can see it in my clients, and it’s amazing the difference commitment and support can make!
