E is for Essence.

That’s a powerful word, isn’t it? Dictionary.com defines essence as ‘the basic, real and invariable nature of a thing or its significant individual feature.” That’s pretty close! Your essence is what lies deep within you at the core of your very being. It’s the center of who you are. Your essence emmenates from your spirit.

We all wear so many hats in our lives <entrepreneur, business person, mother/father, daughter/son, wife/husband/partner, volunteer etc etc> that often times it can become confusing as to which hat to put on at any given moment. But, when you wear your essence and allow you to be your guide. Your essence becomes the umbrella that hovers above you~if you will~ and allows you to wear all those hats brilliantly.

How do we discover what our true essence is? It’s a bit like peeling an onion. Take off the outer layer of what ‘defines’ you,  peel away the layers beneath and you come to the place that allows your essence to shine! It’s done by not hiding from the truth of who you are ~ both the good, the bad, the ugly but also the beautiful. When you allow that, your essence can no longer hide!

Essence, how do you define it for yourself?

  1. Oh, I love this line “wear your essence.” Everything else is a role we play. That core, the ineffable part of ourselves, is what we truly are.

  2. It took me a while to get there but now I am in my middle years I like to think my essence shines through! I define it as being the ‘authentic me’.

Yes, there’s a lot of talk about authenticity right now….and allowing your essence to shine through is so important as you say to being true to you!!! 🙂

  3. This is a complicated one. I’d always had a sense that essence was a positive thing, but for some deep down essence may have some negative attributes too. Perhaps in delving in one can embrace the positive ones and let go of the negatives?

Debbie Ford wrote the “Darkside of Light chasers” and it was all about embracing what seem like negative attributes and being able to see the lessons in them and what they teach. Now, I embrace the essence of my imperfections as they have given me so much…my stubbornness has become my essence of tenacity!!! Does this help?

  4. I love how you’re encouraging people to think, and live, positively. I struggle with this every day. I know it’s the only way to survive, to be happy, but some days it’s so very hard. This month’s A to Z on my blog is “Positive Thinking through Post-it Notes”. I’m trying to encourage others, as well as remind myself.

I love how you say “wear your essence” and “Your essence becomes an umbrella hovering over you…and allows you to wear all those hats brilliantly”

🙂 Oh, Jamie ~ Somedays, I struggle too. It’s only natural. In fact, this morning felt like it might be one of those days for me but I had to grab something at the market and walked past the floral shop. I just stopped for 5 minutes and soaked up all the energy and the colors and WOW…it was a day-changer. !!! 🙂
