Last Weekend, I went “home.” Home. It’s the place where you go to get that feeling of peace. I was at a my pre-prep school reunion in the small suburban town that I grew up in. The town was quintessential New England with all it’s small town nuances and it was a school filled with tradition and teachings of leadership, community and of course, the three “R’s”.
I was reminiscing with classmates from 7th, 8th and 9th grade when I heard IT. I’ve only heard this particular sound two or three times in the last 35 years but I connected to it immediately, like the dear old friends I was talking with.
Like a beam of light, this sound filled me. It only lasted for 10 seconds as it was a quarter past the hour but I heard it depth of my being. It said loudly and fully “all is well”. I was filled with that deep feeling of peace And, I was home. It was not a voice of a friend. It was not the voice of a teacher. And, no, it was not the sounds of the baseball game I was watching. It was the sound the Tower Bells Tolling from the church that I went to as a child. I can hear it now, in my mind.
Reminders to connect to yourself come in all shapes and sizes! What is your reminder? Click To TweetThe sound that, now 35 years later, showed me how to get that feeling of peace once again. It rang true. It’s connection to me was instantaneous. I would hear it sing from class rooms, playing fields and my own home. It was as if the Tower Bell and my soul were having an intimate, all knowing conversation of knowing something that so many of us forget. It was a sign for me to connect more deeply than I already do.
“Connect to your inner self, Laura, and you will find the feeling of peace.” My Soul and This Bell said. And, this is true for one and all. Last weekend, I went ‘home’ by connecting to that feeling of peace through a sound that resonated through me. Sound is a great way to connect to that feeling of peace.
Where is your ‘home’? Of course, it’s in your soul space. What sounds help you connect to that feeling of peace, that feeling of going home? Is there a song, a melody, a church bell that instantaneously brings you to aligning with ease and harmony? And, once you recognize it, how can you quickly bring it into your day when you are feeling discomfort.

Laura, my sound is not quite as poetic as yours, but it’s just as powerful for me: It’s the sound of the swimming-pool filter humming softly in the background as I lazily enjoyed spending my childhood outdoors in the water. Good times!

Oh Kathleen!!! I think my days as an Aquatic Director squashed that from using that sound to get that feeling of peace ~ but did in-joy my days of Marco Polo at the neighborhood pool growing up!

Mine to it not like yours, it is the quiet still sound of the summer morning just before the birds sing. I rediscovered it and the peace a couple of years ago as I was traveling overseas. I have recently discovered that sound is near at other times of the day as well.

What a beautiful story. For me it is the sound of cow bells. It brings me right back to the mountains in Switzerland. I don’t know if that is “home” for me, but it is a place that brings me great peace.

Cow Bells! For me, that’s what called us home after an afternoon of play in the neighborhood as children! So, it typical was a ‘drat, fun is over’ kind of a sound but can imagine it in the mts of Switzerland as the cows graze peacefully in the pasture!

My sound is the sound of silent prayers inside an old church! When I lived in Brooklyn, NY there was such a place. I used to stop by on the way home from work and sit in a pew at the back of the nave. It was such a soothing, heavenly sound…thousands of voices full of praise and hope.

So funny… years ago my sound would have been that of the El train going overhead… Now my song is that of the birds that welcome me every morning…

Its funny – I was just thinking about sounds from my parents home last weekend, and I wanted to go around the house and simply record those for posterity sake. As my parents have aged I’m aware that someday, those sounds of creaking doors, 130 year old steps, and the doorbell from our old victorian I call home, that I take for granted as centering and grounding will no longer be within ear-shot. I think I’ll record those next visit. Thanks Laura…
